This program merges theater studies with Portuguese, a language spoken officially in nine nations worldwide. With growing political influence from countries like Angola and Brazil, Portuguese language skills are becoming more sought-after. You'll encounter stimulating intellectual opportunities and diverse course options to tailor your academic journey.

Both departments foster strong connections between research and teaching, creating a dynamic educational atmosphere where faculty integrate cutting-edge findings into their instruction.

The theater curriculum helps you build both theoretical knowledge and hands-on abilities through critical analysis, historical study, and practical workshops. You'll have chances to collaborate with industry professionals and access our museum-grade Theatre Collection archive.

Your Portuguese studies will include structured language training alongside explorations of Lusophone literature, film, history, philosophy, politics, and visual arts.
Your third year will be spent immersing yourself in a Portuguese-speaking country, enhancing both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding.
Upon returning to Bristol for your final year, you can undertake independent research projects (either practical or written) and/or complete internships in creative fields.

Instruction occurs through various formats including lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and personalized supervision. Evaluation methods range from presentations and essays to exams, group projects, debates, digital media creations, and research papers.

Our curriculum develops versatile competencies that enhance your employability in today's globalized job market across various professional sectors.

Note: Portuguese is offered exclusively at beginner level. Modern language students enjoy access to our advanced Multimedia Center, plus extracurricular activities including guest lectures, student organizations, language cafes, campus publications, and performance events.
