This program merges theater studies with Italian language, art, and culture, all of which have profoundly influenced Western society. As one of the most widely learned languages globally, Italian is spoken across the world by the Italian diaspora. The curriculum provides a stimulating academic journey with diverse opportunities to tailor your studies to personal interests.
Both academic departments foster a dynamic connection between research and teaching, creating an engaging educational atmosphere where faculty integrate cutting-edge findings into their instruction.
The theater component enables you to enhance both theoretical knowledge and hands-on abilities through critical analysis, historical perspectives, and practical sessions. Students can collaborate with industry professionals and access our museum-certified Theatre Collection archive.
Your Italian studies will include structured language training alongside explorations of Italy's cultural heritage, with elective courses covering literature, film, philosophy, political thought, and visual arts. Your third year will be spent studying abroad in Italy to deepen linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. For details on international study options, visit the Centre for Study Abroad.
Upon returning to Bristol for your final year, you'll have options to complete an independent research project (either practical or written) and/or gain professional experience through creative industry placements.
Instruction occurs through various formats including lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and personalized project guidance. Evaluation methods range from presentations and essays to exams, collaborative work, debates, digital media projects, and thesis work.
Our program develops versatile skills that enhance employability in today's globalized job market across various sectors.
Italian language study is available for both beginners and advanced students (A-level equivalent or higher). Modern language students enjoy access to our advanced Multimedia Center and can participate in extracurricular activities including guest lectures, cultural societies, language cafes, student publications, and performance events.
