This program merges Music studies with Russian language, literature, and cultural exploration. Russian holds strategic significance as a language spoken across multiple nations and within sizable diaspora communities, including in the UK. The curriculum provides a stimulating academic journey with intellectual rigor and diverse elective options to align with your personal interests.

The Music component delivers comprehensive studies in musicology, composition, and performance across various styles and genres. These are enhanced by weekly concerts, frequent masterclasses, departmental performances, and opportunities to engage with Bristol's vibrant music scene. The department boasts international academic recognition while maintaining a warm, inclusive atmosphere, with many faculty members leading ensembles and performing alongside students.

You'll undertake structured Russian language training while delving into the rich literary, cinematic, historical, philosophical, political, religious, and visual traditions of Russian-speaking societies. Your third year includes study abroad in a Russian-speaking environment, deepening both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding.
Both departments foster strong connections between research and teaching, alongside dynamic musical performance opportunities, creating an energetic academic environment where teaching evolves with current research developments.

Instruction occurs through various formats including lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and individual project guidance. Evaluation methods encompass presentations, essays, analyses, examinations, group projects, debates, podcasts, video essays, and thesis work.

Our program develops versatile skills that enhance your employability in today's globalized job market across various professional sectors.

Russian language study accommodates both beginners and those with A-level (or equivalent) proficiency. Modern language students benefit from our advanced Multimedia Center and extracurricular offerings like guest lectures, cultural societies, language cafes, student publications, and performance events.

Music instruction and performances occur in the historic Victoria Rooms, a prominent Bristol landmark featuring a 530-seat concert hall, recital space, extensive studio resources, and dedicated practice facilities for Music students. Numerous organ and choral scholarship opportunities exist through partnerships with local churches and Bristol Cathedral.
