This program merges Music studies with Portuguese, the predominant language in the southern hemisphere. With growing political influence from nations like Angola and Brazil, Portuguese language skills are becoming more sought-after. You'll encounter stimulating intellectual challenges and diverse course options to tailor your academic journey.

The Music curriculum provides extensive studies in musicology, composition, and performance across various styles. These are enhanced by weekly concerts, masterclasses, departmental performances, and involvement in Bristol's vibrant music scene. Our internationally recognized department fosters a welcoming atmosphere, with staff frequently collaborating with students in musical ensembles.

Your Portuguese studies will include structured language courses alongside explorations of literature, film, history, philosophy, politics, and visual arts from Portuguese-speaking regions. A mandatory third-year abroad experience will deepen your linguistic and cultural understanding.
Both departments emphasize research-informed teaching, creating dynamic learning environments where musical performance opportunities complement academic studies.

Instruction occurs through various formats including lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and individual supervision. Evaluation methods range from presentations and essays to exams, collaborative projects, debates, digital media creations, and research papers.

This program develops versatile skills valued by employers worldwide, preparing you for diverse career paths in our globalized society.

Portuguese is offered exclusively at beginner level. Modern language students enjoy access to cutting-edge multimedia resources and extracurricular activities including guest lectures, cultural societies, language exchanges, student publications, and performance events.

Music instruction and performances occur in the historic Victoria Rooms, a Bristol icon featuring a 530-seat concert hall, recital space, studios, and practice facilities. Numerous choral and organ scholarships are available through partnerships with local churches and Bristol Cathedral.
