This program merges comprehensive historical understanding and refined research abilities from a history degree with deep cultural insight and advanced language proficiency in Russian, a strategically significant language spoken across multiple nations and sizable diaspora populations, including within the UK.
You'll become part of two academic departments with scholars specializing in diverse areas, fostering interdisciplinary expertise while examining connections between these fields. Both departments emphasize the integration of research and teaching, creating a dynamic educational atmosphere where faculty incorporate cutting-edge findings into coursework.
Your studies will include systematic Russian language instruction alongside explorations of Russian-speaking cultures through elective units spanning literature, cinema, history, philosophy, politics, religion, and visual arts. A year abroad in your third year allows immersion in historical studies within a Russian-speaking nation's unique cultural context.
In your final year, you'll investigate historical-Russian connections through an independent research project, incorporating Russian-language sources. This unique combination of historical, linguistic, and cultural knowledge positions you to bridge intercultural communication across borders.
Instruction occurs through various formats including lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and individual supervision. Evaluation methods encompass presentations, written assignments, commentaries, examinations, group projects, debates, digital media projects, and research papers.
Our curriculum develops versatile skills that enhance employability in globalized industries and various professional sectors.
