For more than four decades, the University of Brighton has been at the forefront of sport and leisure research, establishing itself as a leader in this academic field.
The department has consistently produced world-class research with global influence, offering PhD candidates an opportunity to engage in critical examinations of sport and leisure while contributing to socially relevant, action-oriented scholarship.
Many recent PhD candidates have secured full funding, including tuition and living expenses, through the university's participation in the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Programme.
Our research strengths span diverse topics such as racial dynamics, sports politics, coastal recreation, migration studies, identity issues, labor rights in sports, gender and sexuality in athletics, sports tourism, martial arts, sports media, athletic violence, cultural adaptation, coaching dynamics, and intercultural interactions in sports.
