The University of Brighton provides a dynamic, nurturing, and intellectually engaging setting for PhD studies in English literature across diverse literary disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach connects with historical and cultural research through our Centre for Memory, Narrative and History, as well as performance studies via our specialized Performance and Communities Research and Enterprise Group.
Accepted candidates will become part of a vibrant postgraduate network within literature and the broader School of Humanities and Social Science, joining cohorts specializing in areas such as modern and contemporary poetry, prose, drama, gender studies, sexuality, and Elizabethan theater. Recent doctoral projects have explored creative practice, queer performance, modern technological representations, global Bohemian culture, 17th-century British lesbian perspectives, independent Black publishing, and British travel literature about Montenegro.
As an English Literature PhD candidate, you'll receive personalized supervision throughout your research journey, from thesis development to completion, with additional support for professional growth including conference presentations, academic publishing, and career preparation.
Funding options for doctoral studies at Brighton include the Doctoral College Award and AHRC-supported Techne studentships. The Techne program provides either tuition coverage or combined tuition and living stipends, with applications typically due in January.
