Choosing to study Philosophy at Birmingham means becoming part of an energetic and diverse research community, fostered by the Department's varied intellectual perspectives and methodologies.
Our faculty provides specialized guidance across numerous philosophical disciplines, such as: Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Language, Logic and Mathematics, Ethical Philosophy (both theoretical and applied), Metaphysics and Epistemology, and Philosophy of Religion.
Students may opt for either the conventional PhD structure or our innovative PhD by Papers alternative. This unique approach allows candidates to compile a thesis consisting of multiple interconnected articles, similar to academic journal publications, instead of producing a single monograph.
Birmingham's Philosophy Department pioneered the PhD by Papers format in the UK, following its successful adoption by leading American institutions, offering significant benefits for graduate researchers.
