Our composition research program is designed to enhance your abilities as you explore a dynamic musical landscape that blends classical traditions with cutting-edge advancements, merging acoustic instruments with state-of-the-art technology.
In this program, you'll have the opportunity to produce musical and sound-based works utilizing electroacoustic techniques, digital tools, conventional (and unconventional) instrumental/vocal writing, or a fusion of these approaches. We also encourage projects incorporating interactive systems, multimedia elements, and immersive sound environments, supporting you in developing your unique artistic voice.
The Music Department provides two postgraduate research pathways, whether you aim to culminate your academic journey with a PhD or undertake Masters-level research after completing an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants must submit sample compositional work in the form of scores and/or recordings (as appropriate to specialty). These can be submitted by mail, or (preferably) electronically, using wetransfer or similar or a weblink.
Our requirements for postgraduate research are dependent on the type of programme you are applying for:
For MA by Research programmes, entry to our programmes usually requires a good (normally a 2:1 or above) Honours degree in Music or a related subject, or an equivalent qualification if you were educated outside the UK.
If you are applying for a PhD then you will usually also need to hold a good Masters qualification in Music or a related subject.
toefl - 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking and 21 in Writing
ielts - 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band
