The PhD program is overseen by the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Formulation Engineering. We combine knowledge from multiple disciplines (Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Chemistry) to develop multiphase structured products in various forms. The Integrated Studies in Formulation Engineering PhD concentrates on investigating the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms that build product structures, as well as how these structures are preserved or degraded during use. A key aspect of this methodology is its emphasis on attaining optimal product performance and determining how to accomplish it, rather than simply analyzing current processes. This represents a shift from conventional chemical engineering practices, requiring greater interdisciplinary collaboration and creative thinking.
Students will adopt a multidisciplinary perspective, drawing from Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Biosciences, to explore this relatively uncharted field. The goal is to establish a comprehensive framework for designing, producing, and evaluating the effectiveness of formulated products.
