Birmingham's Film Studies research programs are guided by faculty from both the Film and Creative Writing Department and the Modern Languages Department, offering students access to diverse perspectives and extensive scholarly knowledge.
These departments foster a dynamic and expanding postgraduate community closely linked to B-Film: The Birmingham Centre for Film Studies.
Students can pursue Film Studies through full-time or part-time enrollment, opting for either an MA by Research or PhD program, with distance learning options available. The discipline encompasses Television Studies and various Media Studies components. Our accomplished supervisors have significant publications in specialized fields such as Film Theory, Global Cinemas, Hispanic film traditions, American and European film, Animation, Cognitive approaches, Genre Studies (particularly horror, children's films, and fantasy), Adaptation studies, Television Series analysis, Aesthetics, Film Philosophy, Feminist perspectives, and Screenwriting techniques.
