The Master of Arts in History program allows you to cultivate specialized knowledge across diverse subject areas where the History Department excels, spanning Medieval Studies, Early Modern History, Global History, Contemporary History, and Modern British Studies.

You have the option to focus on a specific historical track, involving both coursework modules and dissertation research within your chosen specialization. Available pathways currently include:

Modern and Contemporary History specialization
Global History specialization
Medieval and Early Modern History specialization
All candidates initially apply to the general MA History program. Pathway selection isn't required during application; you'll specify your preferred specialization during module selection after program admission, ensuring adaptable graduate studies.

Qualification Requirements

You will need an Honours degree, normally in any humanities or social science discipline, such as History, Politics, Cultural Studies, or Literature, and normally of an upper second-class standard. All applications are treated on their merits, and we are happy to consider applicants who may have travelled by non-standard routes. Applications should highlight your interest in the programme and any relevant experience you have, academic or otherwise. Applicants are encouraged to contact the programme convenor to discuss their application before submitting it.

IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band is equivalent to:

TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 Listening, 22 Speaking and 21 in Writing.

Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills

Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component
