The University of Birmingham's BA Modern Languages and English Literature undergraduate program equips you to thrive as a globally aware individual. This unique course combines linguistic studies with cultural exploration through the literary works of diverse societies across different historical periods.
You'll have the opportunity to learn a modern language (French, German, Italian, Russian, or Portuguese) from beginner or advanced levels while simultaneously studying English literature. This dual focus creates meaningful connections between disciplines. Birmingham's language instruction incorporates cultural studies through literature, history, and politics, enhanced by complete immersion during the Year Abroad. This joint honors program explores literature's historical and contemporary influence on society. You can enroll in our specialized Shakespeare module during your second year and potentially join our educational trip to Stratford-upon-Avon.

A level grade B is required for the advanced language you wish to study. It is also possible to study two beginner (including post-GCSE) languages without taking an advanced language, as long as one of your beginner languages is French or Spanish.
IB Diploma:
6,5,5 in Higher level subjects plus 32 points overall. You also require a Higher Level or equivalent in each modern language that you plan to study, plus HL 6 in English Language & Literature / English Literature.
BTEC qualifications:
BTEC Extended Diploma: DDM, plus AB at A-level in the required subject/s mentioned above.
BTEC Diploma: DD, plus AB at A-level in the required subject/s mentioned above.
