The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program allows you to undertake guided research on your selected subject and develop a written dissertation (usually not exceeding 70,000 words). The MPhil can be finished in 1-3 years for full-time students or within 4 years for part-time study. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) involves more extensive research, culminating in a substantial dissertation (typically around 90,000 words) that makes an academic contribution. PhD candidates typically complete their studies in 2-4 years full-time or up to 6 years part-time. Initially, most students enroll in the MPhil program. Candidates conduct supervised research at the forefront of their discipline, culminating in a comprehensive thesis. Progression from MPhil to PhD requires successful completion of an evaluation, usually including submitted work and an oral defense.
