Material Futures represents the intersection of science, technology, and design. The MA Material Futures program fosters a fully interdisciplinary design methodology. You'll investigate future lifestyles through cross-disciplinary collaboration and practice. By partnering with specialists, embracing experimentation, and dissolving barriers between design, science, and technology, you'll transcend conventional fields to address 21st-century needs, aspirations, and challenges.
We maintain that understanding present lifestyles is fundamental to envisioning tomorrow's possibilities. Our philosophy emphasizes evaluating both current and future contexts of design choices. You'll be guided to synthesize social, scientific, political, environmental, ecological, and economic investigations. These perspectives will shape forward-looking design concepts, material innovations, and research-driven explorations.
Beginning with materiality—the tangible elements we interact with—we blend advanced and traditional technologies. Our students represent varied backgrounds spanning fashion, architecture, industrial design, communication, textiles, critical theory, digital media, and speculative practices.
