The MA Biodesign program investigates bio-inspired design approaches as catalysts for eco-friendly innovation. Biodesign represents a developing field. Although publications and exhibitions on the subject are increasing, the discipline lacks a standardized definition. Alternative terms like biophilic design, bio-integrated design, biomimetic design, and bio-informed design are used. While their meanings differ slightly, they share a common philosophy: that nature can teach us how to develop more sustainable lifestyles. At Central Saint Martins, the MA Biodesign program interprets biodesign as integrating the life-supporting principles of biological systems into design methodologies to move toward a more comprehensive, sustainable tomorrow.
Study format
The MA Biodesign is available in an extended full-time format spanning 60 weeks across two academic years. Students should dedicate 30 hours weekly to their studies, encompassing both instructional sessions and self-directed learning.
This structure was intentionally created to allow participants to continue their education while maintaining part-time jobs, internships, or caregiving obligations.
