At Aberdeen, the International Relations and Spanish & Latin American Studies program places you at the center of modern global discussions, while honing your expertise in a major European language and its cultural context. This combination enhances your understanding of our interconnected world and current historical developments. Graduates emerge well-equipped for diverse career paths in politics, media, government sectors, NGOs, and beyond.
Aberdeen's Spanish & Latin American Studies program boasts an exceptional reputation, having received the top 'Excellent' rating in the most recent national Teaching Quality Assessment. The university offers one of the most vibrant environments for mastering Spanish and exploring the cultures of Spanish-speaking nations. You'll develop proficiency in this global language, used by 350 million native speakers across 19 Latin American countries, Spain, and increasingly throughout the United States.
Your studies will encompass historical, anthropological, literary, and cultural materials including texts, films, and visual arts. The International Relations component examines global interactions between nations and organizations, addressing issues of wealth distribution, persistent inequalities, regional conflicts, nationalism, democratic principles, and ongoing peace and security challenges. You'll learn from distinguished scholars recognized for their international publications and frequent media commentary on global affairs. A key feature of this four-year program includes spending half of your third year abroad, either as a teaching assistant or exchange student in a Spanish-speaking country, to refine your language abilities. This experience provides an excellent springboard for international careers in business, NGOs, development work, government, politics, and journalism, while developing transferable skills in critical thinking and communication valuable across numerous professions.
