French studies at Aberdeen enjoy an excellent reputation, consistently receiving top marks for educational quality. This comprehensive, adaptable program spans language, literature, history, and culture, offering both four and five-year pathways with opportunities for international study. A major European language like French provides significant benefits in today's global landscape. With a distinguished history in both teaching and research, Aberdeen's French program examines diverse topics ranging from medieval times to modern eras, covering regions from the Caribbean to North Africa. Our undergraduate language courses accommodate all proficiency levels, complemented by offerings in cinema, modern society, history, and cultural studies. The flexible curriculum allows pairing French with nearly any other discipline, enabling you to customize your degree to match your personal goals. Enhance your linguistic abilities through courses exploring cinema, modern society, Francophone cultures, post-colonial studies, philosophy, history, sociology, linguistics, theater, and literature spanning from medieval times to contemporary works. Learn from faculty renowned worldwide for their research expertise, covering areas from medieval scholarship to modern French cultural politics. Both single honors in French and most joint honors programs offer two options: Mode A (5 years) includes a full academic year abroad in a French-speaking region, while Mode B (4 years) incorporates half a year overseas. The first two years are identical for both modes, allowing you to defer your choice until December of your second year. We highly encourage applying for the Mode A pathway.
