The Centre for Optometry and Vision Science unites researchers from various backgrounds, all dedicated to clinically significant vision studies that utilize optimal techniques for assessing visual function and its structural foundations. While we've outlined some research areas below, we welcome discussions about specific ideas or projects prospective PhD candidates might propose, provided they align with our expertise. Refractive errors occur when abnormal eye growth prevents light from focusing precisely on the retina. Myopia (nearsightedness), a growingly prevalent focusing issue, often worsens during school years as the eye keeps developing, potentially affecting a child's self-perception and participation in sports. Our Center oversees the Northern Ireland Childhood Errors of Refraction (NICER) study, the most extensive longitudinal research in the UK and Ireland tracking vision changes, especially refractive errors, throughout childhood and teenage years. Additional research explores how study time, outdoor activities, and digital device usage influence vision, along with ongoing clinical trials testing optical and pharmaceutical approaches to slow myopia progression.
