The Law School, as per the UK's independent assessment of research quality, achieved a 46% world-leading rating for its research (REF2021). For REF2021, the Law unit presented impactful case studies, such as initiatives promoting dignity within Scotland's social security framework. Alongside traditional academic publications, their submission featured the acclaimed documentary "It Stays With You." Dr Esther McGuinness leads the Law School, while Prof Rory O'Connell oversees research. Emphasizing socio-legal and interdisciplinary approaches alongside traditional legal scholarship, the School particularly encourages projects related to Law and Social Justice, especially those connected to Ulster University's Law Clinic. Potential research topics might encompass: Justice accessibility through clinical legal education, Legal assistance for self-represented litigants, Social welfare legislation, Civil rights, administrative justice and tribunal improvements, as well as studies on poverty and welfare policy changes.
