The Post Primary PGCE is a full-time, one-year program designed to equip students for teaching careers. Upon finishing their initial teacher education, graduates can demonstrate their teaching proficiency and earn a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, enabling registration with the General Teaching Council of Northern Ireland. Additionally, they'll gain 60 CATS credits applicable toward a Master's in Education. The PGCE totals 120 credits (60 at Master's level 7 and 60 at postgraduate level 6). Aligned with the Northern Ireland Curriculum's goal of empowering youth to reach their potential and make sound life choices, Ulster University's PGCE program cultivates teaching expertise across three key domains: Professional Values and Practice, Professional Knowledge and Understanding, and Professional Skills and Application. The program develops educators capable of: designing, delivering, and evaluating effective lessons for Northern Ireland's 11-18 age group; acquiring essential knowledge to enhance student learning; becoming reflective practitioners who assess their teaching; and committing to continuous professional growth for improved student outcomes and school development. Participants demonstrate competence by: showing thorough comprehension of the Northern Ireland and National Curricula; mastering their subject's role in Key Stages 3 & 4's broader educational framework focused on personal, societal, and economic/environmental development. PGCE completion also requires students to: consider school-specific curriculum influences; understand learning processes and socio-cultural educational factors; effectively plan, teach, and assess lessons; manage diverse classrooms; employ varied teaching strategies for all learners, including those with special needs; ensure learning progression and differentiation; implement assessment practices; foster literacy and numeracy through subject teaching; cultivate problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills; promote equality and positive relationships; collaborate with colleagues; and develop ICT competencies for professional use.
