Exploring health-enhancing physical activity from physiological, behavioral, social, cultural, and nutritional viewpoints for the general public. There's growing acknowledgment that regular exercise positively impacts health and wellness, with active lifestyles offering significant societal and economic advantages. Developed jointly with the School of Sport and School of Nursing, this program prepares knowledgeable professionals capable of designing, implementing, and managing sports, physical activity, and health programs. Well-documented public health concerns like obesity, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes are exacerbated by physical inactivity—a key factor in 17 chronic illnesses. WHO statistics reveal inactivity causes 3.2 million global deaths annually, ranking as the fourth highest mortality risk factor.
Consistent exercise delivers proven physical, mental, and social health advantages. However, activity rates in Northern Ireland and Great Britain stay concerningly low, with under 40% meeting official recommendations and certain groups maintaining alarmingly inactive routines.
This program deepens understanding of both the scientific foundations and practical approaches for promoting beneficial physical activity. Students examine how physiological, behavioral, social, cultural, and nutritional factors influence individual and community health through sports and exercise. Graduates gain comprehensive expertise to professionally encourage active lifestyles while decreasing sedentary habits.
