Curatorial practice is a fast-growing discipline within the cultural and creative industries. Hosted at our globally recognized art institution, MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art), this career-oriented program equips students with sophisticated practical and theoretical skills for curatorial work, encompassing collections, artist commissioning, exhibition interpretation, audience engagement, project coordination, and critical theoretical frameworks.
managing and developing collections (including acquisitions and loans), while examining their historical and contemporary significance
conducting research, planning, and executing exhibitions, curatorial initiatives, and artist collaborations
creating interpretive strategies, educational programming, and audience expansion through digital approaches
building professional networks and ensuring long-term career sustainability in the curatorial field.
The program initially explores fundamental themes within evolving economic, social, and cultural contexts, such as decolonization, equity and inclusion, community engagement, and environmental responsibility. Students then refine their curatorial expertise within their professional settings, gaining thorough insight into industry standards while preparing for emerging opportunities in cultural sectors.
Created in collaboration with industry leaders and guided by MIMA's experienced curators, this program integrates directly with MIMA's exhibition calendar, offering students opportunities to participate in various cultural events, artistic projects, and gallery exhibitions.
