Counselling psychology focuses on exploring the causes of psychological distress and acquiring techniques to reduce it, while enhancing overall wellbeing and mental health.
You'll master fundamental psychology competencies, studying cognitive functions, neurological aspects, behavioral patterns, group dynamics, and childhood development's long-term effects, alongside specialized counseling abilities relevant to various helping professions.
The curriculum covers mental wellness, therapeutic processes, eco-psychology, and the wounded healer concept. You'll hone counseling techniques through peer practice sessions and develop reflective skills. During your final year, you'll collaborate with community organizations on service assessments - past initiatives have addressed homelessness, youth mental health, addiction treatment, and veteran support services.
While this program doesn't provide counselor certification, it equips you with transferable counseling competencies sought in education, housing, mental health, corrections, and nonprofit sectors, or prepares you for advanced postgraduate studies.
