Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in English Literature involves completing an extensive independent research project meeting publishable standards. The PhD program spans three years full-time or six years part-time, while the MPhil requires two years full-time or four years part-time. Candidates submit a thesis of up to 90,000 words for PhD evaluation or 60,000 words for MPhil assessment, showcasing original research that advances the field. This culminates in an oral defense (viva voce examination). Associated research centers include MEMO (Medieval and Early Modern Research), GENCAS (Gender in Culture and Society), and CREW (English Literature and Language of Wales). While there are no mandatory PhD courses, students may enroll in relevant MA modules. The program involves conducting interconnected research studies that contribute to the final dissertation. Participants refine essential research skills for advanced literary study, supplemented by campus training programs. Opportunities include presenting at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference. From the second year onward, students may teach undergraduate tutorials and seminars, receiving both training and compensation. Approved conference attendance and external research may qualify for financial assistance.
