Earning a PhD or MPhil in Philosophy from Swansea University allows you to undertake an in-depth research project driven by your personal academic interests. These prestigious degrees can open doors to academic careers or enhance opportunities in various sectors including education, government, and private industry. The full-time PhD program spans three years (six years part-time), while the MPhil requires two years of full-time study (four years part-time). Candidates must submit a thesis - up to 100,000 words for PhD candidates or 60,000 words for MPhil students - showcasing original research that makes a meaningful contribution to the field. This is followed by an oral defense (viva voce examination). Our vibrant research community is supported by dedicated faculty members who are actively engaged in diverse research areas such as: modern political theory, practical ethics, phenomenological studies, philosophy of emotions, gender studies, and economic justice. As a graduate researcher, you'll participate in skill-building workshops, present your work at departmental seminars and university conferences, and may have teaching opportunities (with compensation) starting in your second year. Approved conference attendance and external research activities may qualify for financial assistance.
