Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Egyptology allows you to engage in an extensive research initiative driven by your personal academic interests. The PhD program spans three years for full-time students or six years part-time, while the MPhil requires two years full-time or four years part-time. Candidates must submit a thesis of maximum 100,000 words for PhD evaluation or 60,000 words for MPhil assessment, showcasing original research that makes a meaningful contribution to Egyptological studies. This culminates in an oral defense of the thesis (known as a viva voce examination). Operating at the highest academic standards, you'll pursue innovative research covering ancient Egyptian civilization, including its history, archaeology, religious practices, and linguistic systems - from early hieroglyphics to demotic scripts and Graeco-Roman temple inscriptions, along with literary and cultural studies encompassing the Ptolemaic and Roman eras. The program enhances essential research capabilities for advanced work in any Egyptology specialization, supplemented by campus-based skills development initiatives. Participants can present their findings at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference. From the second year onward, there may be opportunities to lead undergraduate tutorials and seminars, complete with specialized training and compensation. Subject to approval, financial assistance is available for conference attendance or research conducted beyond Swansea University.
