Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Education allows you to engage in an extensive research initiative driven by your personal academic interests. The PhD program spans three years for full-time students or six years part-time, while the MPhil requires two years full-time or four years part-time. For the PhD, you'll produce a thesis of up to 100,000 words, whereas the MPhil requires 60,000 words, both showcasing original research that advances educational scholarship. This culminates in an oral defense of your work (known as a viva voce or viva). All faculty members in SUSE hold doctoral degrees and maintain active research profiles. The department's research expertise covers diverse educational topics, with senior faculty recognized internationally for their scholarly contributions and success in securing research funding. Many staff members have extensive experience guiding postgraduate students to completion and possess broad disciplinary knowledge. As a PhD/MPhil candidate, you'll hone advanced research capabilities essential for educational scholarship, complemented by campus-based skills development programs. You'll also have opportunities to present your work at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
