The MA by Research in War and Society at Swansea allows you to pursue an in-depth project driven by your personal academic interests. This prestigious qualification can open doors to academic careers or enhance opportunities in education, government, and private sector roles. The program spans one year full-time or two years part-time, ideal both for those completing their first research degree after coursework and those planning advanced research. You'll produce a 40,000-word thesis showcasing original contributions to the field, followed by an oral defense (viva voce). Our vibrant research community features dedicated scholars with expertise spanning the American Civil War, Spanish Civil War, war's societal impacts, legal frameworks in conflict, African post-war recovery, European diplomacy, and Strategic Studies. Key research groups provide focus and collaboration: the Conflict, Reconstruction and Memory Research Group (CRAM), International Studies, and Conflict and Security (ISCAS). Research students participate in skills training and present their work at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
