A Master of Arts by Research in History allows you to pursue an extensive research initiative driven by your personal historical interests. This program spans one year for full-time students or two years for part-time participants. Ideal for those seeking their first research degree after coursework or contemplating advanced studies like a PhD, the program pairs you with a specialist supervisor. You'll produce a thesis of maximum 40,000 words, showcasing original investigation that advances historical understanding, followed by an oral defense (viva voce). Our expertise covers medieval, early modern, and contemporary periods across British, European, and worldwide contexts. The vibrant academic environment at Swansea thrives on active research contributions from both faculty and graduate students. The History Department hosts numerous seminars, conferences, and scholarly events to enrich your research experience.
Throughout the program, you'll refine essential historical research methodologies, supplemented by university-wide skills development opportunities. You'll gain experience presenting your work to peers and faculty during departmental seminars and the annual postgraduate conference.
