The MA by Research in Classics allows you to pursue a personalized research project driven by your academic interests. This program spans one year for full-time students or two years part-time, serving as either a capstone to previous coursework or preparation for doctoral studies. You'll conduct original research culminating in a 40,000-word thesis that makes a meaningful contribution to classical studies, covering areas from ancient languages and literature to philosophy, culture (from Homeric times through the late Roman Empire), and modern interpretations of antiquity. Following submission, you'll defend your work in an oral examination (viva voce). Our department specializes in diverse topics including Greek and Roman literature, with particular expertise in ancient narrative traditions, Hellenistic and imperial fiction adaptations, Greek tragedy, classical philosophy, and political thought.
Operating at an advanced academic level, you'll engage with fundamental theories and analytical methods central to understanding Greco-Roman civilizations.
The program enhances essential research capabilities for specialized classical studies, supplemented by university-wide skills development opportunities. You'll present your findings at departmental seminars and the School of Culture and Communication's postgraduate conference, sharing your work with fellow researchers and faculty.
