Classical Studies delves into the literary works of ancient Greece and Rome, examining the societies that produced them. This three-year BA program enables you to explore translated texts from across the ancient Mediterranean while gaining insights into Greek and Roman civilizations from their earliest days through the Roman Empire's decline and its lasting legacy. You'll uncover the myths and narratives of these cultures while honing your skills in detailed textual analysis. The curriculum covers well-known works like epic poems and dramas alongside lesser-studied ancient genres such as satirical writings and early novels.

Though these ancient sources may seem remote, their impact continues to shape Western and global cultures today. You'll examine artifacts that reveal aspects of Greco-Roman history, social structures, architectural achievements, military campaigns, gender roles, religious practices, philosophical thought, and economic systems—or even explore ancient Egypt (which was as distant to the Greeks as those civilizations are to modern people). The program also teaches innovative research methods for studying these remarkable antiquities.

Within the Classical Studies single honors track, you can choose to specialize in one of six focused pathways: Greek, Latin, Classics (combining both languages), Egyptology, English Literature, or Philosophy.
To boost your professional skills, we provide various career-enhancing opportunities including employability placements like the Week of Work initiative.
Our strong connections with local schools—through programs like the Welsh Classics Hwb and the Schools Work Placement module—allow you to earn academic credit while gaining teaching experience by introducing younger students to classical civilizations.
Classical Studies students develop thorough research capabilities, learning to formulate and articulate complex ideas with clarity and precision. The program cultivates meticulous attention to detail and equips you with strategies for confidently approaching unfamiliar subjects.
