Why pursue a science and engineering foundation year? Embark on a science and engineering foundation year at Solent University to enhance your academic and subject-specific abilities before commencing your degree program. Course summary The Science and Engineering Foundation Year serves as perfect preparation for undergraduate studies, with successful completion providing direct entry to bachelor's programs in engineering, yacht design, or electronics. You'll graduate from the foundation year equipped with crucial academic and subject-specific competencies, positioning you for success in your degree studies. The curriculum features modules such as a collaborative technology project, information and analysis studies, theoretical and practical examinations of technological concepts, and a specialized project aligned with your intended degree. This degree-focused project is guided by faculty members who will teach in your chosen program, ensuring the skills you develop directly support your future studies. Teamwork forms a central component of the program. From the outset, you'll engage in both individual and group assignments, facilitating connections with peers and cultivating essential collaborative skills. These abilities prove invaluable in science and engineering fields, where interdisciplinary cooperation is fundamental to project success. Ideal candidates This foundation year caters to students lacking the UCAS points for direct admission, including mature learners resuming education, younger students without conventional qualifications, or those seeking career changes after completing further education. You'll experience a supportive, student-centered learning environment throughout the program. Our teaching staff possess extensive experience working with students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. Foundation year classes maintain small sizes, prioritizing personal growth and hands-on learning. The teaching methodology evolves throughout the year, gradually shifting responsibility to students in preparation for degree-level study. Our foundation programs combine broad academic skill development with industry exposure before you specialize in your chosen undergraduate degree. Some degree pathways incorporate an industrial placement year, allowing you to gain practical work experience through a full-time position between your second and third academic years.
