The MSc in Migration, Mobility and Development program provides a unique chance to explore the intersection of development studies and migration research through multiple critical lenses. Our foundational course mirrors the department's wide-ranging academic approaches, examining migration and development through political economy, decolonial, postcolonial, and institutional frameworks, incorporating insights from Sociology, Geography, Political Science, and Anthropology. The curriculum connects with policy development while exploring creative strategies for political engagement.
This degree equips students with analytical frameworks to examine modern global issues through the lens of human mobility. It presents intellectual dilemmas in migration and development studies, exposes students to diverse methodological approaches, critically examines conventional migration policies, and encourages taking informed positions on current debates within these fields.
Key course themes include: migration economics, colonial legacies and racial dynamics, human trafficking, citizenship and social integration, diaspora communities, transnational networks, migration governance, environmental displacement, conflict-related migration, border studies, and advocacy work. The program benefits from faculty expertise in development and forced migration studies while fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration across SOAS. Students can enhance their learning through practical experience, with internship opportunities available both within our department and through partner institutions like the International Organization for Migration, London International Development Centre, and various global NGOs.
