The MPhil/PhD in Gender Studies offers a distinctive program that merges advanced Gender Studies theory with specialized knowledge of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East—a hallmark of SOAS. The Centre for Gender Studies encourages applications for our MPhil/PhD program across all Gender Studies disciplines. Our focus lies in developing critical theoretical expertise and deep regional understanding, particularly concerning Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Faculty and current researchers explore diverse theoretical and empirical topics, enabling broad supervision opportunities. The Centre provides dedicated Gender Studies training for researchers, supplemented by regular seminars. We particularly welcome applicants interested in gender and sexuality research, including specialized areas like security, law, migration, diasporas, political movements, queer theory, transgender studies, critical race theory, transnational feminism, queer/trans of color critique, and decolonial approaches. Projects examining gender/sexuality in relation to Asia, Africa, the Middle East, or their diasporas are strongly encouraged.
