The MA in Buddhist Studies with Intensive Language is a multidisciplinary program that explores Buddhism through historical, philosophical, anthropological, and material culture lenses. Designed for students seeking to expand their understanding of Buddhism broadly or specific traditions, it also prepares those planning advanced research or fieldwork within Buddhist communities.

At SOAS, this program adopts a non-confessional, contextual methodology, emphasizing Buddhism's diverse historical and geographical evolution. Importantly, it recognizes Buddhism as an actively practiced faith. The curriculum critically examines how academic research, both Western and Asian, has influenced contemporary interpretations of Buddhism.
