The interdisciplinary Department of Law and Criminology fosters applied, theoretical, and doctrinal research spanning Criminology, Forensic Psychology, Law, Social Work, and Sociology. In REF 2021, our entire submission achieved world-leading or internationally excellent ratings for research impact.

Approximately 50 research-active faculty members and 50 doctoral candidates comprise our vibrant academic community. PhD students engage actively within multidisciplinary research teams, participating in student-led seminars and professional development initiatives. We provide comprehensive research methodology training and maintain partnerships with external organizations offering optional internships and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

Qualification Requirements

Candidates for a place on the MPhil/PhD programme will have undergraduate and taught Masters degrees in a relevant subject. The Masters degree would typically have included training in advanced research methods and/or doctrinal research, and be awarded with a Distinction or high Merit.

English language requirements
All teaching at Royal Holloway is in English. You will therefore need to have good enough written and spoken English to cope with your studies right from the start.

The scores we require
IELTS: 6.5 overall. Writing 7.0. No other subscore lower than 5.5.
Pearson Test of English: 61 overall. Writing 69. No other subscore lower than 51.
Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE): ISE III.
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) grade C.
TOEFL ib: 88 overall, with Reading 18 Listening 17 Speaking 20 Writing 26.
