Our faculty members specialize in German literature, culture, cinema, and history, with research and teaching that both encompasses and expands upon conventional German studies, establishing Royal Holloway as a premier destination for postgraduate German studies.
This program allows you to thoroughly investigate your chosen field of interest, while also offering an opportunity to explore an academic area as preparation for PhD research. Although you'll pursue independent study, you'll receive dedicated individual guidance throughout your program. Collaborating closely with your specialized advisor(s), you'll formulate a precise research focus and produce a dissertation of 30,000-40,000 words.

Our extensive expertise enables us to deliver contemporary perspectives, expert guidance, and intellectual stimulation. Our innovative research spans from medieval times to the modern era, covering literature, film, philosophy, and visual arts. We provide postgraduate supervision by renowned scholars in diverse fields from the 18th to 21st centuries, with particular strengths in Enlightenment studies and Goethe (including gender and political themes), 19th-century realism and women's literature, Weimar Republic film and literature, Modernism and avant-garde movements, Austrian literature, post-war German cinema, contemporary women's writing, and gender studies. Our faculty welcome inquiries from prospective postgraduate researchers in their specialized areas.
