This program provides a Single Honours degree focused on studying human history through scientific methods, with hands-on opportunities to work with archaeological artifacts and participate in fieldwork.
Archaeology investigates diverse evidence of past human activity—from objects and structures to entire settlements and landscapes—to understand how civilizations evolved. The curriculum covers global, European, and Irish/British archaeology across various eras, from early human development to contemporary heritage studies. Queen's University Belfast ranks among the top UK institutions for Archaeology, placing third for student experience in the 2022 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and maintaining its top position for student satisfaction in the 2022 Complete University Guide.
Palaeoecology analyzes environmental data to evaluate how natural phenomena and human actions have shaped ecosystems, climates, and landscapes. Coursework explores topics like ancient habitats, evolutionary processes, and historical economic and climatic shifts.
By integrating these disciplines, students develop both broad and specialized expertise through excavation projects, field studies, international trips, and lab work. Graduates pursue diverse career paths, including roles in archaeological consulting, heritage preservation, surveying, and various opportunities within and beyond the cultural heritage field.
