This program offers students rigorous academic development in both History and Philosophy, two complementary fields of study. Its foundational principle is that comprehending the present (and preparing for the future) demands the capacity to examine and analyze the past while recognizing how historical research methods and philosophical concepts work together to shed light on human civilizations, including modern societies. Queen's History curriculum covers eras from ancient Greece and Rome to modern times, encompassing the histories of Ireland, Britain, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. The Philosophy component introduces students to contemporary discussions in ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and political philosophy, alongside examining influential philosophical figures like Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Mill, and Marx. The curriculum aims to develop diverse skills that promote self-directed learning and progressively enhance independent study capabilities.
