This program provides a Single Honours Archaeology degree with an added Portuguese language component.
Archaeology examines diverse evidence of human history, including artifacts, structures, settlements, and landscapes, to understand societal evolution. The curriculum covers global, European, and Irish/British archaeological periods from prehistoric eras to contemporary heritage studies. Queen's University Belfast ranks among the top UK institutions for Archaeology, placing third for student experience in the 2022 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and maintaining its top position for student satisfaction in the 2022 Complete University Guide.
Alongside developing archaeological expertise through excavations, fieldwork, international trips, and lab work, students in the Archaeology with Portuguese program gain language skills and explore Lusophone cultures (including literature, film, linguistics, art, and history). The program includes a mandatory year abroad at a Lusophone partner university, currently the University of Coimbra in Portugal - the nation's oldest university situated in its cultural center - where students study Archaeology between their second and third years.
