This Joint Honours program provides an interdisciplinary study of human history alongside contemporary Irish language, Gaelic heritage, and identity through a humanities lens. Students gain practical experience handling archaeological artifacts and participating in fieldwork.
Archaeology investigates diverse evidence of human history - from objects and structures to entire landscapes - interpreting how civilizations evolved. The curriculum covers global, European, and Irish/British archaeology across all historical periods. Queen's University Belfast ranks among the UK's top archaeology schools, placing third for student experience (Times/Sunday Times 2022) and first for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2022).
The Irish studies component emphasizes modern language acquisition and cultural understanding. Students undergo intensive Irish language training while exploring various cultural expressions through film, literature, and poetry. The program also examines Gaelic identity formation through mythology, folklore, and connections to Scottish Gaelic traditions.
By combining these disciplines, students develop comprehensive knowledge and practical skills through excavations, field studies, international trips, and laboratory work. Graduates pursue diverse careers including archaeological fieldwork, heritage management, and various opportunities within and beyond the cultural sector.
