Our Doctoral Programme stands as one of London's most dynamic and rigorous research degrees. Students join an internationally acclaimed research community that prizes academic excellence and cutting-edge training. We welcome scholars from across the globe who gain from our School's specialized knowledge, vibrant research environment, and outstanding facilities. As the School of Business and Management, we uphold equal opportunities for all students, PhD candidates, and staff. Our PhD Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee provides an open forum for all doctoral researchers to enhance our program's inclusivity through constructive dialogue and progressive initiatives.
Typically spanning four years of full-time study, our research degrees require students to make original contributions to their academic field. We boast an impressive track record of securing College Studentships and placing graduates in prestigious academic roles at leading UK and international institutions. Many alumni have also assumed influential positions across business, corporate, and government sectors. Our structured first-year program introduces diverse social science methodologies, equipping PhD candidates with comprehensive skills for their independent research. This interdisciplinary initiative collaborates with various Queen Mary and University of London departments.
We actively encourage participation in workshops and training offered by the London Interdisciplinary Social Science (LISS) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), of which we're a member. At Queen Mary, you'll benefit from dual supervision, receiving consistent guidance throughout your studies. Through regular meetings, you'll develop a strong working relationship with your supervisors, who will prepare you for the crucial progression assessment occurring 9-12 months into your research.
Admission decisions consider academic history, research proposal quality, and faculty availability to supervise the chosen topic. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary proposals that might benefit from cross-departmental supervision. Applicants must submit a 1,500-word research proposal (excluding references), academic transcripts, and two reference letters. September intake applications should be completed by March of the same year.
Our current entry criteria are: undergraduate degree with First Class Honours, masters (MA, MSc or MRes, usually not an MBA) at Distinction level in Business, Management or discipline related to your research topic. Overall IELTS score of 7 with 6.5 in writing at the time of application, if English is not your first language. TOEFL minimum score 100 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking.
