This program provides an interdisciplinary exploration of arts and mental health, with a special focus on theater and performance. Designed for recent graduates in any arts discipline or mental health-related field (psychology, health sciences, social sciences, etc.), as well as professionals in applied arts, mental health, education, social work, and related areas, this distinctive MSc is a collaborative effort between the Centre for Psychiatry and the Department of Drama. Explore how creative arts contribute to research, practice, education, advocacy, and activism in mental health Analyze representations of mental health experiences in arts and popular culture Investigate how artistic practices can challenge and broaden clinical and public perceptions of mental health and care systems Understand collaborative approaches between mental health professionals, artists, and advocates in clinical and community settings Cultivate your specialization through optional placements and artistic projects. Program Focus Combining arts and science methodologies, this program critically examines mental health theory and practice, emphasizing the arts' vital role. Topics include the history, theory, and application of arts in mental health promotion, artistic depictions of mental health, and arts-based interventions for prevention and treatment (with an emphasis on theater and performance). Evaluation Methods Assessment includes: Essays Presentations Project proposals Reports Documentation portfolios Learning Approach Instruction blends expert lectures from academics, clinicians, and artists with seminars, group work, hands-on workshops, and site visits. Research skills are developed through dedicated seminars. Career Opportunities Some participants are already qualified art/drama therapists, practicing artists, or mental health professionals seeking to deepen their expertise, refine their practice, network with peers, and advance their careers. Others use the PgDip as a foundation for careers in education, mental health services, or postgraduate research/doctoral studies in arts or mental health.
Degree requirements – You need a 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in a relevant subject. IELTS (Academic) minimum score 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking, TOEFL minimum score 92 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking.
