A new collaboration between the UK and US to advance science and technology has sparked growing interest in industrial biotechnology and synthetic biology (also called engineering biology). This program trains students to apply engineering principles to these fields. The curriculum covers essential techniques like DNA assembly, next-gen sequencing, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, cell-free synthetic biology, directed evolution, and bioinformatics with coding. Participants will also complete a supervised Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology Research Project, guided by experts across diverse specialties such as structural biology and evolutionary genetics.
Graduates will gain the expertise needed for careers in both established biotech firms and emerging startups within this sector. The UK boasts Europe's highest concentration of biotech startups (McKinsey), offering abundant employment prospects throughout the country, including London.
