This specialized LLM program, delivered through a collaboration between Queen Mary's Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) and the Institute of Art and Law (IAL), provides a distinctive and rigorous examination of legal matters pertaining to art, cultural artifacts, and heritage preservation. Students gain comprehensive knowledge of legal frameworks governing the arts sector and cultural property, along with practical insights into their real-world implementation. Benefit from instruction by leading legal scholars and industry professionals Engage in cutting-edge research within this dynamic legal field Participate in networking and social activities organized by the Art, Business and Law initiative, student groups, Queen Mary, CCLS student associations, and the IAL Access a diverse range of public lectures, workshops, and seminars covering the broad spectrum of subjects available to all CCLS LLM students across various specializations. Program Highlights The curriculum includes organized visits and legal discussions at prominent UK cultural institutions. Past excursions have featured guided tours of the British Museum, Tate galleries, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, accompanied by legal analyses of their collections and operational practices. Some visits form part of our structured Co-Curricular Programme during term time, featuring engagements with industry professionals, while others occur as informal, spontaneous opportunities. The academic experience is further enhanced by our Visiting Scholar and Researcher in Residence initiative, which fosters a vibrant research culture through interactions with visiting academics and their specialized workshops. For instance, our inaugural scholar from the University of Amsterdam presented a public lecture on Nazi-era art restitution, conducted student seminars, and led a research methodology masterclass for all postgraduate candidates. Additional academic support includes optional participation in our Critical Thinking and Writing in Law lecture series, designed to enhance legal writing and research capabilities for all LLM students. New students may also attend introductory sessions during CCLS orientation weeks, covering foundational topics in common law, commercial law, and related subjects.
