This MSc in Podiatry (Pre-Registration) program offers graduates from non-podiatry backgrounds a two-year pathway to transition into a rewarding career in podiatry. As a podiatrist in either NHS or private settings, you'll play a vital role in enhancing patients' health, wellbeing, and daily living.
This full-time program emphasizes clinical practice and health promotion, featuring extensive placements across Scotland. Graduates become eligible to register with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as qualified podiatrists. Podiatrists are trained healthcare specialists who assess and manage foot and lower limb disorders. Your work will involve preventing and correcting deformities, maintaining mobility, and alleviating pain for patients across all age groups. You'll address diverse conditions including musculoskeletal issues, diabetes-related complications, circulatory disorders, and neurological conditions - often requiring complex wound care management.
First-year modules cover foundational anatomy and physiology while developing essential clinical communication skills. You'll gain professional competencies for collaborative healthcare work and begin your podiatry career journey. The curriculum reinforces research capabilities including academic writing and information literacy. Early clinical placements introduce practical podiatry experience, complemented by studies on human gait and musculoskeletal disorders. You'll expand your understanding of health behavior modification while learning about pharmacological impacts on lower limb health, supported by ongoing clinical placements.
Second-year studies advance critical analysis and research capabilities while deepening knowledge of foot imaging techniques. The program challenges your perspectives on health education and multidisciplinary teamwork through diverse clinical placements, including advanced practice opportunities. These experiences help integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application while refining research skills and clinical competencies for professional transition. The curriculum also develops leadership abilities and innovative approaches to modern podiatric challenges, culminating in specialized research projects.
Our graduates emerge with strong professional identities and collaborative skills essential for multidisciplinary healthcare teams. This interprofessional focus is embedded throughout all our healthcare programs, including this podiatry course.
