This education program equips graduates with the essential expertise, competencies, and practical training needed to instruct design and technology at the secondary school level. Participants alternate between university studies and school placements, ensuring they emerge as self-assured educators prepared for secondary classroom environments. The program offers two qualification levels - both recognized teaching credentials, with the postgraduate option enabling accelerated access to master's programs: Professional Graduate Certificate in Education or Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Students select their preferred qualification during the course, with successful completion leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) endorsement.
The curriculum focuses on mastering subject specialization within the National Curriculum framework, encompassing pedagogical approaches for diverse learners and cultivating professional values. This includes studying child development across cognitive, social, and physical domains, along with acquiring classroom management skills and personal attributes for effective teaching environments.
All participants complete a module exploring broader educational contexts, developing crucial abilities for their initial teaching roles while establishing a platform for ongoing professional growth. The module combines large-group lectures with seminar discussions, frequently led by collaborative trainee groups with tutor guidance. This approach helps meet Teachers' Standards by linking educational theory with practical classroom application.
