In today's challenging and evolving legal environment, top-tier training is crucial for aspiring barristers. Northumbria University's Bar Course equips students with the vital knowledge and hands-on skills needed for contemporary legal practice, replacing the previous Bar Professional Training Course. Our program is delivered by seasoned barristers and bolstered by an extensive network of legal professionals, including judges and practicing barristers. The curriculum covers: Civil Litigation (including evidence and dispute resolution), Criminal Litigation (with evidence and sentencing), Advocacy, Client Conferencing, Legal Drafting, Opinion Writing, Professional Ethics, and Legal Research. Our law school prepares graduates for diverse legal challenges, particularly in foundational areas of pupillage and early career practice. Students learn to adopt professional thinking and conduct from day one, engaging in realistic case simulations involving client meetings, courtroom advocacy, document preparation, and ethical considerations. This practical approach ensures graduates are fully prepared for pupillage. The course features extensive teaching hours, including specialized exam preparation sessions where faculty share insights for succeeding in Bar Standards Board assessments. Additionally, students participate in year-round workshops to strengthen their exam skills and assessment readiness. An optional Mediation qualification is available at no extra cost.
