Our two-year MSc in Environmental Health examines how our surroundings influence daily life and wellbeing by studying how environmental stressors affect bodily functions. This program follows the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's curriculum (a globally recognized professional organization), covering hazard and risk assessment across key areas: housing and health, environmental protection, occupational safety, food safety, and public health. Graduates will gain comprehensive knowledge of environmental risks and mitigation strategies through scientific, technical, or legal approaches to foster healthier communities.
During the second year, students can choose a semester-long Advanced Practice experience - either an internship, international study, or research collaboration. This immersive component strengthens career prospects while refining both theoretical knowledge and practical abilities.
Advanced Practice Placement
This pathway provides three months of full-time professional experience to develop crucial workplace competencies. Extended placements may be possible when aligned with vacation periods. While we support students in finding opportunities and refining application materials, securing these competitive positions remains the student's responsibility.
Research Pathway
Participants join our Geography and Environmental Studies Research Group, potentially contributing to publishable studies. Successful involvement could lead to research team recognition - an exceptional foundation for academic careers.
International Study Option
Our global network includes partner institutions across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. This semester abroad maintains English-language instruction while offering cultural and educational enrichment. Note: Some destinations may require student visas.
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) accredits this program, with the initial 180 credits meeting academic requirements for Environmental Health Practitioner certification. Full accreditation unlocks diverse career opportunities across public, private, and nonprofit sectors worldwide.
Our faculty maintain active roles in CIEH committees locally and nationally. During their accreditation review, CIEH praised Northumbria University's exceptional communication channels with the institute.
